The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
