Jair Bolsonaro taken into custody after being considered a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
