RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
