Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important official said the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
